Batman costumes inspired by the movies

Halloween approaches and with it, all the witchcraft and sorcery associated with this popular annual event.
Should you happen to be a parent with excited youngsters, looking forward to trick or treating, then you will know how important it is to get the costume right.
Girls get a real buzz out of becoming a littler witch for the evening and carrying their broomsticks and wearing a witches hat.
But what are we going to do for our sons?

We might immediately think of frightening characters such as zombies and ghosts, but none might appeal quite so much as the legendary batman. He was after all a figure of the night and sits very well in the halloween genre.
If you are the creative type you might be able to watch an old movie from the 60s and then create a suit on that style. It is then very easy to buy some extra from your local store such as his belt and gloves etc to complete your creation.

The 60s showed the Batman costume with a blue/grey suit, boots and cape. The belt had the batman symbol but his hat by today’s standards, was not really up to the mark.
The darker appeal of the 2000′s might be more appealing to you and in particular your child, who will only relate to the most recent incarnation of the character, thanks to the latest movies. Not much you can do about that.So let’s see if you can create something up to the minute.

Tim Burtons character requires us to use completely black material.
When the more recent films were released batman had become an altogether more sinister character with some bad family history , due the fact he had seen his parents murdered.

The evolution of the batman costume

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

In May 1939 ‘Detective Comics’ created a character that would go on to become a household name not just in America but all over the world. That character was Batman (aka ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘The Caped Crusader’). Over the last seventy years he has starred in numerous comics, graphic novels, books, movies and video games. During this time the Batman persona has, in most ways, remained much the same since his conception. The Batman costumes that have been worn, however, have steadily and sometimes dramatically evolved.

The evolution of Batman costumes began within his first year of life. The first things to change were the ears on the costume- they became longer. In July 1939 the utility belt was introduced to his outfit. Despite some minor changes the Batman costumes remained pretty much the same then until 1964. They were just basic, Grey figure-clinging suits with a cape and mask. At one point, D.C. were actually starting to give serious consideration to dropping Batman completely due to sales of the comic slumping so dramatically. Something had to be done and some changes were made to several things in the comic including the Batman costumes. The bat symbol on the costumes’ chest was given a yellow background the shape of the cape was changed.

1966 brought the TV series of ‘Batman’ to our screens. The batman costumes during this period stayed pretty much the same. With the show finally being axed in 1968, after 120 episodes, D.C. tried to re-establish the darker side of Batman. This was only evident in comic form until 1989 when Tim Burton released his ‘Batman’ movie. It was at this point that batman costumes began to become far more ‘body-armour’ orientated. The other big difference was the loss of the yellow and black symbol on the chest.

The gadgetry of Batman

‘Where does he get those wonderful toys?’

This was a very good question indeed. It was asked by The Joker (aka Jack Nicholson) in the 1989 ‘Batman’ movie directed by the masterful Tim Burton.

Throughout the (almost) seventy years of Batman we have been enthralled, stupefied and sometimes amused by his seemingly endless array of personalized gadgetry, vehicles and weapons. There have been the more popular of his possessions such as ‘The Batmobile’ (which can change into ‘The Batbike’), ‘The Batarang’ (a crescent-shaped throwing weapon), ‘The Batcopter’ and the legendary ‘Batsignal’. Even his headquarters, ‘The Batcave’, is full of computers, forensic equipment and a huge criminal database. This is all fully accessible from his latest ‘Batmobile’.

No other super-hero has had such an impressive selection of cool devices as Batman. Yes, we all know about Spiderman and his ‘spidey-sense’, Captain America with his patriotic shield and Wonder-Woman’s golden lasso that forces you to speak the truth but the bottom line is – none of these characters or their gizmos are a patch on Batman. Over the decades we have caught sight of some of ‘The Dark Knight’s less frequently used appliances. There have been such things as – ‘The Batrope’, ‘The Bathook’, ‘The Batphone’, ‘The Batzooka’, ‘The Batclaw’, ‘The Batmissile’, ‘The Batgeiger’, ‘Bat-antidote Powder’ and even…’Bat-thermal Underwear’.

Don’t forget the handy ‘Utility Batbelt’ that Batman wears. This contains all manner of useful devices for when he is out crime-fighting such as; ‘Batgas Pellets’, a portable ‘Batsignal’, a ‘Batknife’ and a ‘Batcommunicator’. That is without mentioning his grapnels, jump-lines, forensic tools, high voltage electric shock weapon, stun grenades and smoke/flash capsules!

I think that it would probably be safe to assume that Batman is into his gadgets in a big way. But going back to that original question posed by The Joker; ‘where does Batman get his toys from?’ Is his butler a secret weapons expert who sits, constructing these gadgets in the evening after he has finished washing the dishes or darning pairs of ‘Bat-socks’? Does Batman employ some crazy scientist to come up with all of these weird and wonderful inventions? Actually, the answer is quite simple and straightforward…

Bruce Wayne (the alter-ego of Batman) inherited an enormous amount of money. He is a multi-millionaire. When Bruce Wayne set up ‘Waynecorp’, which later when on to become ‘Wayne Enterprises’, the invention of a huge arsenal of weaponry, a vast garage of heavily armored vehicles and a gigantic collection of accessories and gadgets was a relatively small matter. With plenty of spare time and millions of dollars to invest in what he felt was necessary for performing his duty as Batman, Wayne soon had a large and impressive collection of anything that any self-respecting enemy of crime could desire.

It is important to remember, however, that although Bruce Wayne has injected unspeakable amounts of his money into his secret sub-life, he has always been known as being an incredibly charitable man with his fortune as well. Although, after thinking about this, it is inevitable that the socially conscious personality of Batman is bound to manifest itself in an equally positive way through the character of Bruce Wayne.
