Halloween approaches and with it, all the witchcraft and sorcery associated with this popular annual event.
Should you happen to be a parent with excited youngsters, looking forward to trick or treating, then you will know how important it is to get the costume right.
Girls get a real buzz out of becoming a littler witch for the evening and carrying their broomsticks and wearing a witches hat.
But what are we going to do for our sons?

We might immediately think of frightening characters such as zombies and ghosts, but none might appeal quite so much as the legendary batman. He was after all a figure of the night and sits very well in the halloween genre.

To create your batman cape, take some black felt, 27″x 45″ . The longer sides is the top and bottom while the shorter sides are the left and right sides. Place a bowl half into the center top of the felt upside down. Using a chalk, draw a circle following the outer edge of the bowl and cut out the circule. This will be the cape’s neck. Now draw a line from the neck’s edge towards the right bottom edge. And the same on the left. Cut along the lines. Make a 12″ mark from the edge of both sides and an 9″ mark from the bottom. Shape the felt to connect the marks and cut away the rest.

Place the bowl halfway from the bottom. Draw a half circle along the sides of the bowl. Repeat this, moving the bowl to the last mark you made. Cut a rectangle, 15″x4″ using the black felt cut outs. Find out the cape’s center top and the strip’s center. Fold the strip in half and put it over the neck and glued it in place. Glue some Velcro on the extension on the neck. Be sure the circle is not tight around the neck. With a print of the batman symbol from your computer, trace your pattern on the yellow-colored foam sheet and stick it on the back of the cape.

The evolution of the batman costume

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

In May 1939 ‘Detective Comics’ created a character that would go on to become a household name not just in America but all over the world. That character was Batman (aka ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘The Caped Crusader’). Over the last seventy years he has starred in numerous comics, graphic novels, books, movies and video games. During this time the Batman persona has, in most ways, remained much the same since his conception. The Batman costumes that have been worn, however, have steadily and sometimes dramatically evolved.

The evolution of Batman costumes began within his first year of life. The first things to change were the ears on the costume- they became longer. In July 1939 the utility belt was introduced to his outfit. Despite some minor changes the Batman costumes remained pretty much the same then until 1964. They were just basic, Grey figure-clinging suits with a cape and mask. At one point, D.C. were actually starting to give serious consideration to dropping Batman completely due to sales of the comic slumping so dramatically. Something had to be done and some changes were made to several things in the comic including the Batman costumes. The bat symbol on the costumes’ chest was given a yellow background the shape of the cape was changed.

1966 brought the TV series of ‘Batman’ to our screens. The batman costumes during this period stayed pretty much the same. With the show finally being axed in 1968, after 120 episodes, D.C. tried to re-establish the darker side of Batman. This was only evident in comic form until 1989 when Tim Burton released his ‘Batman’ movie. It was at this point that batman costumes began to become far more ‘body-armour’ orientated. The other big difference was the loss of the yellow and black symbol on the chest.
