The original films were animated by Iwerks, his name was prominently featured on the title cards. The mouse was originally named "Mortimer", but later changed to "Mickey Mouse" by Lillian Disney. Mortimer later became the name of Mickey's rival for Minnie, and he had a Brooklyn accent.

The films are a continual driving force behind the disney costume industry today, with kids worldwide dressing up in a character at some stage ion their younger years.
